Goldy Yadav

Goldy Yadav is a Fulbright Fellow at the National Institutes of Health (USA) and is pursuing a PhD in Cognitive Science at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. She has a Master's in Cognitive Science from IIT Gandhinagar, and a Bachelor's degree in Zoology (H) from the University of Delhi.

Goldy has a keen interest in understanding how the human brain works and is actively involved in neuroscientific research. Her work focuses on how humans learn new skilled actions, and the brain processes that facilitate such learned behavior. Through her work, she has also demonstrated how retention of a newly acquired memory can be enhanced.

Goldy believes this is the most exciting time to be involved in the field of neuroscience as we are uncovering something truly fascinating about the brain, its functions and the causes behind a number of neurological/psychological disorders. A lot, however, still remains unknown about this enigmatic tissue between our ears!

Introduction to Neuroscience: Understanding Your Brain

Neuroscience is by far the most exciting branch of science because the brain is the most fascinating object in the universe. Every human brain is different - the brain makes each human unique and defines who he or she is.

The brain is perhaps the most complex physical object known to mankind. It is responsible for “elementary” behaviours such as walking, more “complex” processes such as learning and memory, and is, arguably, the seat of consciousness. Through demonstrations, fun experiments, activities, discussions and short lectures this course attempts to demystify the brain, and discusses some (but certainly not all) of the wonderful functions that this pound of flesh allows.

The important areas that will be covered in this course include:

  • Structure & Function of Brain; the two hemispheres and how they ‘talk’ to each other; the different lobes of the brain and their role

  • How the brain controls the body and our behavior

  • How the brain performs complex functions such as - perceiving the world around us;  learning; memory; emotions; language; attention and performing skilled actions

  • Disorder: What happens to these brain functions when someone suffers from brain injury?

As part of this course students will also learn about the tools and techniques currently used to study the brain, such as EEG, fMRI and single-cell recordings. Furthermore, they will discuss about brain stimulation devices used in research labs such as TMS and tDCS.

Finally, students will learn about some of the simple techniques such as exercises, meditation, deep breathing, adequate sleep, healthy diet and time in nature that help keep the brain healthy.

By the end of the course you should have a better understanding of your own brain, mind, and behavior.
