Connecting the Dots: Concepts in Biology
Develop a strong conceptual foundation in Biology. Start connecting the dots between different ideas & start thinking from first principles. Relevant for students from all Boards.
Course Details
For students in Grades 8, 9, 10, from any Board (CBSE/ IB/ IGCSE/ ICSE, etc.)
We were inspired by some recent posts on Social Media about the excessive focus on methods/ short-cuts/ speed, as opposed to foundational understanding. There's plenty of research about typical conceptual gaps in students' understanding at at various age/ grade levels. Our blog post, Conceptual Learning: What, Why and How, provides a more detailed background.?
With this starting point, our mentors sat down to curate a list of such areas that students could do well to have a deep, foundational understanding of, that they can build on, over time. We have identified such topics across Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Math.
This module is around concepts in Biology - particularly around living/ non-living things, cells, molecules, tissue, organs, etc.?
The content has been chosen based on a knowledge of common student misconceptions and errors- derived from research as well as the experience base of our mentors.
For each topic, the student experience includes pre-work, live sessions with mentors, assignments/ assessments, and feedback. In addition, students can email their doubts and questions to the mentor at any point of time during the course.
The course comprises 6 sessions of 1.5 hours each. Each session will be on a Saturday, between 2:00-3:30pm.
The course is NOT a tuition service aimed at preparation for exams. These courses are also NOT a substitute for school work.

About Facilitator:
Radha Gopalan
Radha is senior mentor and course designer at GenWise.
Her view of the world is one of hidden connections and she believes that a significant part of learning is to unearth these connections. She is an environmental scientist by training, with a deep interest in exploring and practicing "transformative education for sustainable living". Towards this effort she is engaging actively with rural and urban communities to further the idea of food sovereignty.
After 18 years as a global environmental consultant, Radha also wore the teacher's hat for several years at the Rishi Valley School, teaching Environmental Sustainability. She is a Visiting Faculty at the School of Development, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru and engages actively in popular education efforts around sustainability.
Radha has a bachelor's degree in Genetics from the Madras University, a Master's from Osmania University, and a Ph.D from IIT Bombay in Environmental Science.
